Was Jesus Pro-AR-15?

This gives new meaning to clinging to your guns and religion!

This t-shirt is/was for sale on eBay by “snabgc” out of Gainesville, Florida. I posted it here without comment initially as I am not familiar with this passage from the New Testament nor am I a scholar of the Christian scriptures quoted on this t-shirt. Below you will find an explanation by “3 Boxes of BS,” which is instructive. I learned something today!

Jesus AR-15

From 3boxesofbs:

The paraphrase comes from the much discussed Chapter 22 of Luke

35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”

“Nothing,” they answered.

36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors’[b]; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.”

38 The disciples said, “See, Lord, here are two swords.”

“That’s enough!” he replied.

I don’t think there is a consensus on the meaning of that particular verse. More importantly in my mind is to look at the overall message of God’s word.

While God opposed unnecessary violence; He did approve of the death penalty, killing in self defense, killing in war, etc.

Given that Swords were the ‘assault weapon’ of their time; it is easy to understand the idea God would approve of owning/carrying an AR-15.

  2. As a Christian, I’ve never thought about it that way. My parents have always deemed me owning guns as unnecessary/a waste of time/money/energy and I didn’t need guns because I could be protected by God. I guess God helps those who are prepared and help themselves. I want one of those shirts 😀
