Had a fun and interesting conversation with my fellow North Carolinian Sean Sorrentino for the latest episode of the GunBlog VarietyCast (“The Personification of the Firearm”) [UPDATE: the podcast no longer exists, alas]. Not that you should skip the other parts, but my segment starts about 16 minutes in.
We talked about my background and project, and problems with the dominant approaches academics take to studying guns. My big conclusion:
“The thing that has surprised me most about getting into gun culture these past 6 or 7 years is that gun owners are people, too. If you just read the scholarly literature on guns, you would not know that.”
For my longer takes on this, I have published one review article on the topic as well as the concluding chapter to a forthcoming book about guns.
I want a name tag that says “Hi, I’m # 25,648,122 of gun owners in America. How are you?”
